I got a new system called replay TV. Its like any other TiVo system or DVR, EXCEPT I can network it to my PC. Whats so cool about that you say? With a lil program called DV archive I can then take the show I just recorded and burn it to DVD player. As soon as I by the newegg DVD burner.
Its pretty cool.

Yeah, my TIVO has USB ports, which I could use to connect to my network, if Direct TV would activate the dang things!

TIVO2 series boxes are network compatable and TIVO offers the desktop software on their site for free download. You can use the desktop software to upload music to the TIVO from your PC, download programs to your laptop, etc. Also, TIVO2 boxes can be programed from the internet.
But, like Roach said, DIRECTIVO's are stuck on version 3 software and can't even use the advance features of the TIVO1 boxes. They record shows just the same though.

I called DirecTV about that once, to see how to active them. There response was that they were planning on doing that in some future update.
Future...that's a nice specific word

I suppose "future" is a relative word since I have had my DIRECTIVO for over 2 years now.

So how is it that I can record these movies and download them and burn them on DVD and the MPAA or RIAA or whoever isnt mad about this? Is it because I pay to watch HBO and the service for Replay TV?

Yes, part of your subscription is for royalty fees. Also, TIVO and all the other DVR services have proved to the MPAA that their copywrite protection methods are "good enough".

This site might be helpful for Tivo.
Series 2 Hack
Replay TV
I have looked into the hacks for this. Unfortunately, I have seen too many comments on boards that the hacks mess up your Direct TV functions. For the normal Tivo (plain cable), it is probably not a problem. However, my box is both my Tivo and my satellite reciever/decoder for the DTV signal. I might be able to hack it to connect to my network, but then I would not be watching any TV on it (and it couldn't record anything) - at least from what I have read thus far.

Yes, the important thing to remember about DirecTivo is that the software is proprietary and gets updated by DirecTV. The hacks for normal TIVO are normally not applicable to DirecTivo - except the 30 second skip - WOOHOO!

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming it.
